Stonewall's School Report
Project type
Reports
I led the design and production of Stonewall’s School Report, a major national research project examining the experiences of lesbian, gay, bi and trans young people in Britain’s schools. The report needed to communicate sensitive and urgent findings with clarity, credibility and emotional impact, while also supporting wider campaign, policy, fundraising and public engagement goals.
//The Design Process
Research-led storytelling: I developed a clear editorial structure that helped make complex findings accessible to teachers, education staff, policymakers and supporters, balancing data accuracy with a strong narrative flow.
Accessible information design: I created the report templates, grids, typographic hierarchy and chart styles in InDesign, ensuring key statistics and qualitative findings were easy to navigate, understand and share.
Human-centred photography: I built the business case for Stonewall’s first professional photography project, sourced and briefed the photographer, coordinated with a partner school and developed a detailed shot list to bring the research to life through authentic school-based imagery.
Cross-team delivery: I worked closely with Research, Education, Communications and Fundraising teams, managing feedback rounds, senior sign-off, print production and fulfilment while protecting the integrity of the findings and Stonewall’s established brand.
//The Campaign Result
Multi-channel impact: the visual system was adapted across the printed report, social media, direct mail, email fundraising and supporter magazine features, creating a consistent campaign presence across public-facing channels.
Policy and public relevance: the report achieved national media coverage, was widely cited across education and news outlets and supported calls for stronger anti-bullying measures and more inclusive education policy.
Fundraising effectiveness: the project informed a successful multi-channel appeal, using report statistics, photography and first-person storytelling to drive donations, supporter engagement and long-term interest in Stonewall’s education work.
Long-term value: the project established professional photography as an annual programme at Stonewall, with the creative approach and production learnings shaping future campaigns and organisational materials.
